How to add a video to Etsy listings

Along with product images, product videos are a great way to demonstrate your products to customers. It is vital to explain what your products are and how they work to your customers. If you don’t, your customers may misunderstand what they are buying, get upset, and leave bad reviews. This article covers everything you need to know to upload a video to your Etsy listings.

Along with that, this article covers:

  • What are Etsy product videos?
  • How to add videos to Etsy listings?
  • How many videos can I have per Etsy listing?
  • How long can my Etsy videos be?

How do videos work on Etsy listings?

Show your product in use

When shopping online, it can be challenging for customers to imagine how a product is supposed to work. When there is confusion, customers are less likely to buy. You can help alleviate this confusion by providing your customers with a video showing the ins and outs of using your product. Once their confusion is relieved, customers become more confident in their buying decisions. With more confidence, buyers are more likely to make a purchase.

Zoom in on the creative details

The second video idea is diving into what makes your product unique. “A driving force for many consumers buying handmade products is a respect and appreciation for the creative process”, according to Etsy. These videos could include insight into the behind-the-scenes process or how you handle customization requests.

Answer potential customer questions

The third video idea is to answer potential customer questions. This idea is similar to showing your product in use but has more opportunities. Customers have many questions when they go to buy a product. If you know what they are asking, why not make a video with the answers? These videos could cover how you wear, use, or the size of the product. The questions depend on your customers and your product type.

For example, you don’t need to show how to wear the product if you sell paintings. Or what voltage does it handle if you are selling a jacket.

How many videos can I have per Etsy listing?

Etsy only allows sellers to have one video per listing. Given this limitation, your video needs to quickly and accurately convey the message you are sending.

Video Size Aspect Ratio for Etsy

Etsy recommends your videos be in either a 4:3 or 3:4 aspect ratio (width to height). However, Etsy lets you crop videos to 1:1, 4:3, and 3:2 sizes.

What are the file size limits for Etsy videos?

Your Etsy product videos can be up to 100MB. Etsy recommends filming in 1080 HD at 30 FPS and that your videos should be between 5-15 seconds long. However, your product videos are allowed to be between 5 seconds and 1 minute long. If you fall outside of Etsy’s guidelines, you will run into an error. The three most common errors are as follows:

Error when uploading video to Etsy

Error: Oops, please upload a video less than 1 minute long. This error means your video was longer than one minute but not long enough to crash the uploader.

Error: We were unable to upload your file. Try again, or try uploading a new video file. This error means something happened during your video upload that caused Etsy’s uploader to fail. Some common reasons are that your video is way too long, you’re having some internet issues, or Etsy is not working. We saw this error when we tried uploading a 90MB 4-minute video.

Error: Oops, please upload a video longer than 5 seconds. This error occurs when your video is less than 5 seconds long.

Error: Video file size is too large. Please upload a video less than 100 MB. This error occurs when your video is more than 100MB in size.

If your video is too big, but you have a short video, you should switch to a file format with better compression. FLV and MP4 are good for decreasing your video’s overall size.
